Art Blog Post No. 04 – Nov 17th, 2023

I discuss the challenge of doing portrait and figurative painting in the face of post-modern criticism. As a result, I retreated from the figure (2004) and drew inspiration from architecture and landscape as a stand-in for the individual. Now, twenty years later, I am returning to figurative painting with my latest works. Two artists who successfully answered the challenge of post-modernism are Neo Rauch (b. 1960), who has been represented by the David Zwirner Gallery in New York City since 2000. Neo came to prominence around 1998. Dana Schutz (b. 1976) has been represented by the David Zwirner Gallery in New York City since 2000. Dana came to prominence around 2004. Both artists draw inspiration from Max Beckman (1984-1950).
